Counterstrike, arguably now better known in name as the more modern Counterstrike Source, still remains one the server choice of hardcore first person shooter fans. First released in 1999 (beta), Counter Strike a game that still attracts gamers in their hordes.
Arguably, it was Counterstrike that helped the online FPS first take offline. Quake would have a good shout as would Half Life Deathmatch and Unreal Tournament. But it was Counterstrike servers that flooded the online gaming world back in the good 'ol days of game servers.
As a game Counter-Strike is so simple. The less popular VIP mode rarely used. In the early days, a CS server ran a simple rotation of classic maps like de_dust, de_dust2, de_aztec, de_inferno and cs_office. All these maps made it over to the early versions of Counter-Strike Source. I personally remember losing entire weekends, often without sleep to a Counterstrike binge. And I know there were a few others too ;)
Counterstrike brought out a whole new subculture, which today is a multi million pound industry. Not bad for a mod really.
